What is Levulan?Levulan is aminolevulinic acid ( ALA ). It is a natural molecule that, when activated by light, becomes a free radical which is taken up by skin cells and targets damaged skin, acne oil glands, and acne bacteria. |
What conditions does it treat?
It is a highly effective treatment for active acne, including cystic acne. It also works very well for prown pigment such as sun spots or age spots.
How is it activated?
There are many different light sources that can be used. Typically we use a blue light or an IPL to activate the Levulan.
What can I expect during and after treatment?
Levulan is applied for 1-2 hours prior to activation, then you will sit in front of a light source or receive an IPL or both, depending upon the circumstances. You will feel heat, and the treated area will become red, like a sunburn. This “sunburn” will be present for 2-3 days, followed by peeling for up to a week. The treatment is very tolerable.
How many treatments will I need?
Typically 3 to 5 treatments, depending on the severity of the acne or pigment.
Is it safe?
Yes, no scarring or any other health effects have been reported
How long do the results last?
Typically 6 to 12 months. Acne is not curable, so an occasional touch-up will be necessary
